10 Things We Learned From John Cena On Stephanie McMahon's WWE Show
6. Described Living In His Car As “Dope”
A lot of John Cena's biggest fans will be aware of his rags to riches story. Aged 20, he moved to California with just $500 in his pocket and a few bags of clothing. Why? Well, John figured that Los Angeles was a haven for the fitness industry, and he was keen to see what he could make of himself on his own. Unfortunately, that meant living out of his car for a while.
"Unfortunately". Cena didn't see that as unfortunate. He cut in on Stephanie to say that living in the car was his choice, so he doesn't want anyone to portray this chapter of his life as some sort of "woe is me" tale. He described sleeping in a 1991 Lincoln Continental as "dope". Cena actually enjoyed the experience, because it taught him humility and to always be thankful for what he does have.
The local Gold's Gym let John keep his car in their parking lot, which he called home overnight. Each morning, he'd use the gym showers, then clock in and work a shift during the day. Once the place closed up, he'd do his own workouts and then retreat to bed outside in the car.
Rinse and repeat for a while.
This wasn't referenced on ESPN, but there's a famous story from around this same time involving pizza. John noticed a local restaurant saying anyone who could manage a massive pizza in one sitting could get the thing for free. Eventually, the manager said he'd give Cena free pizza if he promised to stop blitzing that challenge and costing the place money.
WE. LIKE. PIZZA.
