9. He Wasn’t A Wrestling Fan

So was this.

Austin seemed taken aback when Orton admitted that he wasn't a pro wrestling fan at all growing up. In fact, he hardly ever paid much attention to what his dad was doing. Wrestling was just 'Cowboy' Bob's job, and not something the young Randy needed to concern himself with.

At this point, he mocked up a convo with his mother: "Hey, we're gonna' watch dad on TV tonight" was not something she ever said. That's pretty incredible, but it speaks to the secretive nature of the wrestling industry back then in the early-to-mid-1980s.

Orton Jr didn't start watching wrestling until he was in high school. By then, he and his friends would discuss their favourites and watch pay-per-views together. Some of them asked if Randy would be interested in become a wrestler himself. He said no - that seemed so impossible, and he didn't have the self-confidence.
