The two biggest names to be announced for the WWE Cruiserweight Classic were undoubtedly Kota Ibushi and Zack Sabre Jr. Many assumed one or both would make it to the final, a feeling that was enhanced when the brackets were released. Once they were on opposite sides of the bracket, a dream Ibushi vs. Sabre Jr. final was almost a given.

As it transpired both men lost in the semi finals to two individuals officially signed with World Wrestling Entertainment. Once the internal decision was made to award the Cruiserweight Championship to the winner neither Ibushi or Sabre could possibly have won the tournament, as both individuals have made it clear that they won't be signing exclusive contracts any time soon.

This is excellent news for the independent wrestling scene, proof that if you are in a good position outside of WWE a living can certainly be made. Neither Ibushi or Sabre Jr. need WWE to succeed. Lower down the ladder a host of individuals may now see their stock rise on the indies through extra bookings and extra demand.

Professional wrestling is currently in great health, it can't be denied.

Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
