Marvel isnt just about giant men pounding the crap out of each other in their underwear. The company hires excellent, charismatic actors to headline their films, as well as proven screenwriters and some of the best established and up-and-coming directors in the industry. It may come as a surprise, but professional wrestling isnt just about giant men pounding the crap out of each other in their underwear either. Its about great stories, told brilliantly by great performers - and WWE does hire great performers. Also average performers, indifferent performers, and downright bowling-shoe-ugly performers on occasion: but hey, thats WWE for you. And to their credit, the Performance Centre/NXT model of developmental is working. In terms of sheer talent, WWEs roster is the tightest and best its ever been. WWE also has probably the best production team and facilities of any comparable organisation like this in the world. Their live event and television teams synchronise so well that theyre capable of putting together video packages including footage that theyve literally just shot. With this in mind, youd think that theyd have restructured their creative teams along similar lines: hired the best in the business, or people who have the capacity to be the best. Instead, the vast majority of the people who work or have worked on the creative team for WWEs shows started out working behind the scenes in television, as interns or assistant producers or something similar. One of WWEs senior creative personnel, Dave Kapoor (a backstage mainstay in the company since 2006) didnt even come from television: he had a background in technology media. His two employers before WWE hired him to help write a wrestling show were CMP Media (a firm that specialises in helping people in the technology industry to advertise to each other) and CNET, the webs foremost technology news and reviews platform. This refusal to hire people with wrestling experience follows on from Vince McMahons decades-long directive that WWF/E is in the entertainment business, not the wrestling business still, even people whove written dialogue before would be a start.
