Quiz time!

Can you name the last Wrestlemania main event that did not include any part-time wrestlers? If you answered the Miz vs. John Cena from Wrestlemania 27, in 2011, you would be correct!

Maybe that was too easy.

Second question: can you name the last Wrestlemania finale in which all contestants made their main event debut? One has to go all the way back to 2003 to find the answer. At Wrestlemania 19 Brock Lesnar squared off against Kurt Angle for the WWE Championship to finish off the show.

The final question, and most important: how many unique individuals have participated in a Wrestlemania main event in the last ten PPVs? Hint: there are twenty-three possible spots in main events since 2006 (not counting Seth Rollins’ cash in). The answer, twelve; only a dozen men have participated in the final match of Wrestlemania in the past ten years. Of those twelve, six had competed in a main event before 2006. To further put these facts in perspective, during the first ten Wrestlemania’s fourteen different men competed in at least one main event.

WWE has taken some steps to insert fresh faces into the climax of its biggest show of the year, notably pushing Daniel Bryan, Seth Rollins, and Roman Reigns to victories in recent editions of the show. However, it’s important to remember that: Bryan was forced into the main event by the fans, Seth Rollins only made a brief appearance in the finale, and Reigns didn’t exactly receive a warm reception from the WWE Universe.

With exciting talents such as, AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, Dean Ambrose, Rusev, Dolph Ziggler, and Cesaro waiting in the wings, the WWE has no excuse to rehash the same matchups fans have seen for over a decade. While legends like John Cena, The Undertaker, Triple H, Goldberg, and Brock Lesnar are still wrestling part-time, WWE cannot allow these men to finish off yet another Wrestlemania. If fans are expected to take the new era of wrestling seriously, WWE needs to allow fresh talent to take center stage at its largest show. Otherwise, the product will never grow.
