Christian is regarded as one of the better talkers of his era. He has always been able to deliver good promos whether he was doing comedy stuff with Edge, solo comedy bits or his general heel promos where he was talking about how great he was. His ability on the microphone is one of his strengths. However, when Christian was just starting out he was part of the Brood stable with Gangrel and Edge. As part of that group, he didn't speak. It was part of the mystery of the character. He didn't speak until he was threatened by Ken Shamrock in 1999 and it was a big deal because we had no idea what he sounded like. Speaking also led to him getting beat up by the Ministry of Darkness group although he was saved by Gangrel and Edge. Once the Brood group ended, Edge and Christian developed into great talkers that were two of the funniest guys in all of WWE. It's weird to think that they would make Christian a mute, but for most of his first year in WWE that's really what he was.
