10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About CM Punk

2. His 2007 ECW World Title Defense Was Supposed To Be Against Chris Benoit

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45aYeTaI3P0 "Chris Benoit was my hero and I was privileged enough to work with him." - CM Punk That quote is from the Raw tribute show dedicated to Benoit that WWE aired when they didn't know that Benoit had committed the double murder on his wife and son. Punk called him a friend and said even though he'll never get to wrestle him he taught him a lot. A lot of the comments from that show were from performers that didn't know how Benoit died. If they had known what happened, their comments likely would have been different. However, that clip shows that Punk had a lot of respect for Benoit. Punk was scheduled to face Chris Benoit for the vacant ECW World Title at the Vengeance 2007 show on June 24th. It was vacant because Bobby Lashley was drafted to Raw. Benoit was moved to the ECW brand to give it some star power and revive it. Since Benoit didn't make it to the show, they changed it to Punk vs. John Morrison, which led to Morrison winning the ECW World Title. A Benoit vs. Punk match likely would have been amazing, but it never happened. They wrestled as a tag team, but that was it. Like nearly everything Benoit related, WWE doesn't want you to remember who Punk was really supposed to face that night.
