10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Daniel Bryan

3. He Wrestled John Cena On Velocity In 2003

When discussing the biggest win of Bryan's career, most fans would probably say WrestleMania 30 because it just happened. However, a case could be made for his SummerSlam 2013 victory over John Cena to become the WWE Champion. That reign only lasted a few minutes thanks to heel turns by Triple H and Randy Orton, but it was still a huge thing to have Bryan beat Cena clean. What's interesting about the Bryan/Cena match wasn't the fact that they were each dating a Bella Twin although maybe that interests Total Divas viewers more. It was that WWE completely ignored the fact that Cena had wrestled Bryan about ten years earlier. The match took place on the February 8, 2003 edition of Velocity, which was a WWE weekend show at the time. Cena was in his rapper gimmick (wearing yellow pants) while Bryan was the pale looking guy performing under the name of Bryan Danielson. They used him a few different times over the years in matches like that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B2jjZbo8Eeo During a 2013 interview with Slam Wrestling, Bryan even mentioned how WWE didn't bring up the 2003 match with Cena: "The match in 2003 from Velocity is interesting because that was the first night that he started going to the main event. He did an interview with Brock Lesnar that night, that's when he started a feud with Brock for the World Heavyweight Championship. That's a very interesting part of the story that hasn't been talked about, really. When we wrestled in 2003, that was his ascension to where he is now. Now, here we are 10 years later." If you're wondering, Cena won the match in about four minutes using the same spinning suplex that he does as a setup move today.
