10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Dolph Ziggler
5. Rey Mysterio Didn't Want To Drop IC Title To Him In 2009
In the summer of 2009, Ziggler was establishing himself as a good midcard heel that could have great matches with anybody. While he was on the Smackdown brand, he was locked into a feud with Rey Mysterio for the IC Title. They had two PPV matches, with Mysterio retaining the title at Night of Champions and then SummerSlam. When Mysterio was suspended for 30 days in August 2009 due to a Wellness Policy violation, he was apparently supposed to drop the IC Title to Ziggler. For whatever reason, Mysterio refused to do so. Perhaps he felt that Ziggler wasn't ready for it although they spent over two months feuding together. As the veteran wrestler, Mysterio probably should have supported the younger Ziggler and put him over clean because it would have really helped Ziggler to beat a top star like Mysterio. Instead, Mysterio refused to do so according to reports by F4Wonline at the time. Mysterio ended up dropping the IC Title to John Morrison, a fellow babyface, in a match that aired in September 2009. That was a fantastic match, but it just didn't seem right that Ziggler was snubbed. Ziggler didn't beat Morrison for the title because management felt like it would hurt Morrison to lose it so quickly. Thanks to the selfishness of Mysterio, Ziggler had to wait until July 2010 for his first IC Title win when he defeated Kofi Kingston.
