15 April 2020 was a dark day.

The post-WrestleMania 36 buzz, whilst undoubtedly dampened by the ongoing health crisis, was still very much there when the company announced that they were suddenly releasing a huge number of wrestlers and staff into the wilderness.

It didn't take long for many to dub the day 'Black Wednesday' and call it one of the most dreary occasions in pro wrestling history. The likes of Rusev, Kurt Angle, Heath Slater, Zack Ryder, Erick Rowan, Luke Gallows, Karl Anderson and more were sent their marching orders.

Some released, like Drake Maverick and Drew Gulak, were soon brought back, but the damage had already been done. WWE’s timing here, coming around one month into a worldwide health panic, was awful. This sorry episode may never be forgotten.
