10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About AJ Lee
4. The John Cena Affair
John Cena was used as a vehicle to remove AJ from her position as Raw General Manager in October 2012. Vickie Guerrero unearthed footage of the duo cavorting, and though the two initially denied the claims, they became a romantic item soon after.
Lee resigned from her role. The ensuing weeks were defined by borderline unwatchable television, including multiple recorded phone calls and a poorly-acted hotel room scene, before the duo accepted their feelings for one another. Cena and AJ embraced on multiple occasions, but the whole thing was mercifully short-lived. The company canned the storyline on the basis that John had become increasingly impatient with Lee's erratic behaviour, but there was no concrete resolution: the couple went their separate ways when AJ double-crossed Cena in a match with Dolph Ziggler, and that was that.
The silver lining was that this allowed Lee to transition into her alliance with Dolph and Big E (Langston), which was one of her career's most productive periods. Still, the storyline made for some grim viewing, and the fact that it flies in the face of Cena's long-held squeaky clean image means WWE would love to delete it from history.
