10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About Backlash

Today, many longtime fans look back fondly at the Two-Man Power Trip, the heel alliance that Steve Austin and Triple H formed after WrestleMania 17. Though the group was only together for about six weeks, they managed to capture the WWE World, Intercontinental, and World Tag Team Titles as they ran roughshod over Raw.

In truth, though, the group didn't really do anything exciting until the very end of their run, when they started feuding with Chris Benoit and Chris Jericho. Prior to that, Austin and HHH had a stale program with The Undertaker and Kane.

The first major match in that feud came at Backlash, when Austin and Triple H (the reigning WWE World and Intercontinental Champions, respectively) took on World Tag Team Champions Kane and The Undertaker with all four titles on the line. The match was long and boring, with the crowd not responding to Austin as a heel and Undertaker (who was at a rough point in his career) and Kane (who was Kane) not working as babyfaces the crowd could get behind.

The Power Trip won the match and the belts, but this whole main event concept was proof that WWE was running out of ideas - and it would get worse later in 2001.
