To paint a picture and help put things into perspective here, it's important to remember that just three years before booking a send up of Hulkamania, the WWF decided to make him Heavyweight Champ again at WrestleMania IX. They did so at the expense of Bret Hart and the monstrous Yokozuna's push.

It didn't work as planned, and Hulk was gone by the summer.

The double title change at 'Mania IX is one of those WrestleMania moments WWE would like everyone to applaud. Unfortunately, the truth is that Hogan's comeback failed to relight the touch paper on his '80s magic, and it felt like a step in the wrong direction for the promotion he had once carried on his mighty shoulders.

Fans had been enthused by the dynamic work of guys like Hart, and some had even enjoyed the work ethic of champions such as Ric Flair. By going back to what had worked before so suddenly, Vince McMahon failed to see that his core audience yearned to kiss the Hulkamania years goodbye for longer than a year or two.
