The WWF Hardcore Title was crafted from a broken replica of the original 'Winged Eagle' Heavyweight Title. Since the championship was passed around more times than a a parcel at a party, this did at least give its lineage some prestige.

The constant shifting was part of the belt's charm, admittedly, but it's also true that the Hardcore Title just wouldn't fit into WWE's PG format today. Whether as a smash-mouth division that focused on blood and guts or as comedic relief, Hardcore usually meant gratuitous violence.

Even when such brutality was largely slapstick and played for laughs, it better fit the Attitude Era's overall feel. WWE likely wouldn't want anything as rough-around-the-edges as the Hardcore Title scene on television now.
