During the 'Attitude Era', the WWF made a lot of noise about the idea that their company was the one most wrestlers wanted to work for. It's true that the tables had turned on WCW by late-1998, but Vader wasn't exactly happy in the McMahon-led promotion. He wanted out of his contract.

Vader even considered retirement around this time, but eventually decided to try and get out of his deal with the WWF in order to make a return to Japan.

On the way out of the promotion, he lost to the likes of Mark Henry, Bradshaw and Edge on television. It didn't seem like they was much bad blood between wrestler and management, but Vader looked like he wanted away.

That was visible, loud and clear, in his performances, he came across like a spent force in late-1998. Eventually, Vader was granted his release and made the jump to All Japan Pro Wrestling.

His WWF run hadn't quite been what many felt it should have.
