10 Things WWE Wants You To Forget About WrestleMania 39
7. The Less Talked-About Issue With THAT Finish
The finish to Roman Reigns Vs. Cody Rhodes in and of itself was the conversation that engulfed the discourse. It's all anybody talked about on Monday morning. Cody lost. The most suitable heir to John Cena's throne - upon which the fans would not let Roman Reigns himself sit - lost.
The type of bad finish it was did not get discussed much, but it should have. WWE did not merely beat Cody Rhodes on Sunday; they made it seem like it his own stupid fault.
On the penultimate Raw before WrestleMania, Cody Rhodes, in a promo duel with Roman Reigns, noticed Solo Sikoa giving him the side eye. He asked what he was looking at and, out of nowhere, blurted out that he wasn't ready. This led to a match on the go-home show. Cody won, proving his point but architecting his own downfall: this line, volunteered freely, motivated Sikoa's role in the plan.
Cody spoke the threat into existence himself, which was hardly the booking of a clever babyface - and hardly a story beat that inspires hope for the next challenger in this apparently endless story. Remember also that Sami speared Jey Uso by mistake at Elimination Chamber.
It's not even effective heat, if you really think about it too deeply. Obviously, WWE does not want you to do that.
They don't want the AEW roster to do that, either; the finish was soul-crushing for fans, and a reminder that WWE might not care too much about pushing want-away wrestlers after all.
