Even wrestling fans who know nothing about college football are likely aware that the world's biggest Oklahoma Sooners supporter is former WWE announcer Jim Ross. With that in mind, it's no surprise that Swagger's status with the school and the team gave him a direct line to J.R.

In Swagger's junior year, former teammate Dusty Dvoracek introduced him to Ross, who was then working as head of talent relations for WWE. The two had a productive meeting, with Ross encouraging Swagger to give him a call after graduation. "The All-American American" clearly kept Ross's words in mind.

Swagger graduated in 2006 with a degree in finance and had a tryout with WWE. Meanwhile, he made fallback plans for life beyond education, including getting a job with a firm in Dallas, Texas.

The day Swagger was supposed to start, though, he was offered a contract from WWE - and the rest, as they say, is history.
