A dedicated fan of the industry growing up, the New Jersey native badly wanted to live out his dreams and become a professional wrestler. In 2001, his fervour only grew when stumbling across the then-WWF's reality TV show Tough Enough. That passion would drive him on to leave inhibitions behind upon finding out about the independent wrestling scene.

Attending a Jersey All Pro Wrestling show in his local area, Lethal was fascinated to learn that the promotion were hosting a competition that would encourage aspiring wrestlers to start training. Talking to Wrestling Inc about this happenstance in 2015, Lethal says that he knew he had to get himself involved.

He did so, but didn't make the cut. The judges planned to announce three different winners, and in the end Jay wasn't one of them. Gutted due to his father taking time off work to attend the contest, his sadness turned to joy when the judges made an exception.

They agreed to train the youngster, and he maintains that he's the only one involved who is still wrestling today.
