10 Things You Didn't Know About WWE Champion Daniel Bryan

2. ANOTHER RANDOM FACT: The 'Yes!' Chant Began Life As A Way To Get Heel Heat From The Crowd

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZevSrKZ4ECo "I was always been a 'wrestler's wrestler. I didn't do much of the entertainment stuff of anything like that and somehow this 'Yes!' chant just took off - and who knows why people like it? I have a theory that people like doing hand motions and saying things at the same time" That was our man D-Bry, being interviewed by Chris Van Vliet (yes, it's another clip from YouTube) in September of last year. "I go out there and say 'Yes!' and people, like...its just fun. Its fun, its interactive and its fun to support the wrestlers that you like by doing that kinda stuff" he says with a smile and a million Dollar twinkle in his eye. Apparently, it all began as a take on UFC fighter Diego Sanchez, who used to chant "YES! YES! YES!" after winning a bout. Somewhere in Bryan's creative (and no doubt slightly bizarre) mind, this seemed like a perfect way to illicit heat for his heel persona. Paradoxically, the "NO! NO! NO!" chants began life as a classic slice of reverse wrestling psychology. By chanting "NO!" in response to the fans chants of "YES!" Bryan was able to get a bigger reaction out of them. See? He's more than just a beard with a wrestler attached to it. At the time of writing, the YES/NO chants have broken into mainstream American culture, so, just as wrestling fans especially enjoy making the chants during offensive exchanges between heel and face, mainstream sports fans enjoy making the "YES!" chants when the team does well and the "NO!" chants when the team does badly. Apparently however, Daniel Bryan does tend to put far too much stock into his own catchphrase. In fact, he consistently downplays his magnificent ring-work, thoroughly relatable character development and magnetic, undeniable charisma in favour of pinning all the credit for his monumental success on the "Yes!" And "No!" chants... "Shawn Michaels was on the live events a little while ago, he was the one who trained me and he just remarked how amazing it was. I love wrestling and I love being a wrestler, but he said, "Now, you're just a sell-out like the rest of us! You go out there and do your thing and people chant 'Yes' and that's kind of your thing." We just laughed about it. I still go out there and wrestle as hard as I can, but it's amazing that something like probably one of the first words you learn in the English language has gotten me to the point where I am now". So, in his own estimation, Bryan's appeal boils down to a simple catchphrase. Is that really all he's selling? NO! NO! NO!

I am a professional author and lifelong comic books/pro wrestling fan. I also work as a journalist as well as writing comic books (I also draw), screenplays, stage plays, songs and prose fiction. I don't generally read or reply to comments here on What Culture (too many trolls!), but if you follow my Twitter (@heyquicksilver), I'll talk to you all day long! If you are interested in reading more of my stuff, you can find it on http://quicksilverstories.weebly.com/ (my personal site, which has other wrestling/comics/pop culture stuff on it). I also write for FLiCK http://www.flickonline.co.uk/flicktion, which is the best place to read my fiction work. Oh yeah - I'm about to become a Dad for the first time, so if my stuff seems more sentimental than usual - blame it on that! Finally, I sincerely appreciate every single read I get. So if you're reading this, thank you, you've made me feel like Shakespeare for a day! (see what I mean?) Latcho Drom, - CQ
