The WWF didn't react to WCW until very late on in the year.

Raw's 20 November effort could be considered a watershed moment for the flagship, but there were signs of change months before that. Goldust burst onto the scene as the most controversial McMahon creation yet on 25 September, and Raw suddenly had a more unpredictable feel.

By November, Diesel was ringing off shoot-style promos about how he'd been positioned as Vince's puppet for most of the year. That was a landmark point in company history; before that, it was extremely rare to hear wrestlers talk about the inner workings of business behind the scenes.

These moments, as well as Shawn Michaels' realistic sell job following an Owen Hart enziguri (also on that 20 November show), added more spice to the product. It'd be too much of a coincidence if this had nothing to do with WCW's bold bid to steal some Monday night market share.
