10 Things You Might Have Forgotten About WrestleMania I

Nearly a decade before he became an actual clown in the company, Matt Borne wrestled on the very first WrestleMania, in a losing effort against Ricky Steamboat. The future Doink the Clown puts up a good effort in a short but entertaining bout which ends up being the highlight of his first run in the company before he would leave the following year.

Here, Borne possesses a good look, holds his own in carrying the workload against beloved super-worker Steamboat and cuts a decent but brief promo prior to the match. With hindsight, you could argue that Borne could’ve been a more significant contributor to the era had he possessed more of an X factor that a bevy of his contemporaries had in abundance.

Borne returned to the Fed in 1992 under the bonkers Doink the Clown moniker in the gimmick-heavy New Generation era – while the character itself had a resounding ripple of a legacy in WWE history, it’s crazy to consider what WrestleMania I would’ve looked like had Doink the Clown been invented for Borne in the '80s instead.
