Like so many other hopeful WWE superstars, Beth Phoenix figured that the best way to prepare for a career in pro wrestling was to compete in amateur-style wrestling while in school. She quickly proved that she belonged on the mat, and that a bright future in the pros was assured.

At Elmira's Notre Dame High School, Phoenix became the first female wrestler appointed to the school's varsity squad. Even after graduating from high school, she continued to compete in the sport. In 1999, she became the Northeast Women's freestyle champion, and later that year, she won the New York State Fair women's tournament. While winning these contests, Phoenix was a member of the USA Wrestling organization.

There have been many successful pro wrestlers without amateur backgrounds, but nearly all would say that a strong background in the sport is a major help. There's no doubt that the years Phoenix put in in the wrestling room helped pave her way to WWE.
