10 Times ECW Was The Most Insane Wrestling Company In The World
3. Born To Be Wired
In August 1997, ECW held a show called Born to Be Wired. The show itself was nothing too spectacular; the undercard was a pretty standard ECW B-show, with matches such as Chris Candido vs. Chris Chetti and Mikey Whipwreck vs. Louie Spicolli taking place. Taz beat Al Snow, Rob Van Dam beat Tommy Dreamer, Shane Douglas beat Lance Storm. So far, so normal.
The show has gone down in history for one reason and one reason only, that being the main event. Sabu and Terry Funk went one on one in a match that was too extreme for the most extreme, an orgy of violence that saw the ECW World Heavyweight Championship defend in a no ropes barbed wire match. Yes, that is exactly what you think it is.
Sabu and Funk put their bodies on the line in a match that is rightly remembered as one of the most brutal in American wrestling history, a blood-filled massacre featuring two of the most insane performers in the annals of the art. The match was actually quite terrible, an excessively macabre setting that produced little of value outside of the initial shock. Sabu won the match, if you were curious.
The most insane part of it all? Shane Douglas won the title a little over a week later. Two men put their long term health in actual jeopardy, although so The Franchise could rise again.
