10 Times ECW Went Way Too Far

8. Joey Styles' Unfortunate Remark

You know the story about Madusa going to WCW with the WWF Women's Championship? And you know about how terrified Vince McMahon was of Bret Hart doing the same thing with the WWF Championship? Well it actually happened with Mike Awesome and the ECW Title. Mike Awesome was ECW Champion, but refused to sign a new contract citing owed wages from Paul Heyman, and he signed with WCW joining the New Blood. An injunction was filed to stop Awesome appearing on WCW television with the title, and a convoluted compromise was reached where Mike Awesome (a WCW wrestler) would lose the ECW Championship to Tazz (a WWF wrestler) on an ECW show. Unfortunately, that's not the only controversy here. When WWE put on their first One Night Stand event, he wrestled Masato Tanaka, and it seemed like no-one was happy to see him. While he eventually won over the crowd, Joey Styles was aggressivley hostile on commentary about Awesome, to the point it was just uncomfortable, including saying "Suicide Dive by Mike Awesome, and it's a shame he didn't succeed in taking his own life" Tragically, Mike Awesome did in fact kill himself two year later, adding a much larger layer of sadness on what should be a very enjoyable match. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLrulcZ9UXY
