10 Times Great Wrestling Was Ruined By Bad Writing

4. Kevin Nash Vs. Goldberg (WCW Starrcade 1998)

By Starrcade 1998, Goldberg was starting to run his course. He was the undefeated WCW Champion, and after notching up an insane 173 straight victories, it looked like nobody could stop him. The gimmick was gradually losing favour with the crowd, however, and it was the perfect time for somebody to finally slay the beast and benefit from the huge rub gained from defeating the most dominant man in wrestling.

Logic dictated that this honour would go to a younger, up and coming wrestler who could use the push to take his career to the next level. “Logic” wasn’t really a thing in latter day WCW, and instead of giving the spot to a Rey Mysterio or Chris Jericho, WCW put Kevin Nash in the spot.

Nash was incredibly popular at the time, and the while match generated a tremendous atmosphere, the result didn’t make any sense. There was nowhere for Nash to go in the immediate aftermath because he was already one of the industry’s biggest stars. Goldberg’s first loss was totally squandered.

The finish saw Scott Steiner attack Goldberg with a taser, and the aftermath was catastrophic. Goldberg lost his way irrevocably. WCW’s decline hastened and three years later, they were out of business.
