10 Times Wrestlers Botched Their Biggest Moment
8. David Flair
Fans who repeatedly beat Charlotte with the stick of nepotism should take a look back at her half-brother David’s WCW run. He debuted at Souled Out 1999, teaming with his father in the pay-per-view’s penultimate match, but it was evident he was not at the level required to be scrutinised by the watching world.
David soon began a full-time schedule and was quickly awarded the United States Championship by his father, who was serving as WCW’s on-air president. Nepotism was spun into an angle with commentary referring to David being “shoved down everyone’s throats” despite him having “no wrestling ability right now”.
David can’t be left with all the blame, however. His entire 35-day reign was one long botch. Even though he defended the championship on TV five times, taking on Buff Bagwell, Bobby Eaton, Dean Malenko, Sting, and Chris Benoit, each match showed more of his inadequacy – despite the bouts ranging between just 2:00 and 4:54 in length.
After he lost the belt to Benoit on Nitro (#203), his slip down the card was as rapid as his fast-tracked push.
