Having purchased the company from his father in 1982, Vince McMahon Jr soon set about implementing his vision for the WWF.

That vision revolved around having Hulk Hogan become champion, but with Bob Backlund in possession of the belt at the time, McMahon was going to have to shuffle the pack. He suggested turning Backlund heel, in order to set-up an eventual defeat to the babyface newcomer Hogan, but Backlund wasn’t having any of it.

A compromise was reached in that Backlund would remain a good guy, and instead drop the title to the Iron Sheik. Backlund himself claims that the idea was for him to then win back the title a couple of weeks later, but plans were changed and after a mere four-week reign as WWF Champion, Sheik lost the belt to Hogan.

McMahon had eventually gotten his own way, while Backlund left the company just a few months later. He’s since revealed in an appearance on the Two Man Power Trip podcast that his refusal to turn heel and accept McMahon's plan stemmed from worries over his daughter being bullied at school if her father were to play a bad guy in the ring.
