10 Times Wrestling And MMA Were A Bad Mix

When people think of ECW, one of the first things they think about is Sylvester Terkay. All right, that's not true at all. Poor Terkay was cursed with a manager who was far more charismatic and interesting than he was, which isn't a great sign. And it’s not like we’re talking about someone like Bobby Heenan as the manager in question either - this is Elijah Burke we're talking about!

Terkay is a legit badass. He finished 2nd in the 1992 NCAA Division Heavyweight tournament, losing out to Kurt Angle. He went on to have a handful of MMA fights before joining pro wrestling, and he was given the gimmick of a legit fighter in the new ECW. Initially, management seemed to have big plans for him, as he defeated Matt Hardy in his first match. And then, they started to realize he wasn’t the most interesting performer, and the roles reversed as he was moved into a bodyguard role for the future Pope.

Terkay’s run in the major leagues was short. He was let go less than six months into his run, and yet, amazingly, was undefeated in singles competition during that time!

As Rust Cohle from True Detective said "Life's barely long enough to get good at one thing. So be careful what you're good at." Sadly, I can't solve a murder like Rust...or change a tire, or even tie a tie. But I do know all the lyrics to Hulk Hogan's "Real American" theme song and can easily name every Natural Born Thriller from the dying days of WCW. I was once ranked 21st in the United States in Tetris...on the Playstation 3 version...for about a week. Follow along @AndrewSoucek and check out my podcast at wrestlingwithfriends.com
