After hardcore wrestling legend Terry Funk broke his retirement in December 1997 to join WWE as Chainsaw Charlie, he formed a tag team with another hardcore legend, Mick Foley, who went by his Cactus Jack persona. Together, they started a rivalry with The New Age Outlaws over the WWE World Tag Team Championship.

After a failed attempt on an episode of Raw in January 1998, Cactus Jack and Chainsaw Charlie earned the opportunity to face The New Age Outlaws for the titles in a Dumpster match at WrestleMania 14.

At the event, the two teams battled all over the arena, and in the end, as Cactus Jack placed both Road Dogg and Billy Gunn inside a wooden pallet, Chainsaw Charlie lifted them with a forklift and dropped them into a backstage dumpster to win the tag team titles.

However, Vince McMahon had one final trick up his sleeve the next night on Raw and stripped them of the titles since they dropped The New Age Outlaws in a random backstage dumpster instead of the assigned dumpster at ringside. McMahon booked a rematch between the two teams inside a steel cage for the vacant titles, which Billy Gunn and Road Dogg won thanks to D-Generation X.
