There was an excess of midcarders and jobbers in the 15 Minute Hardcore Battle Royal at WrestleMania 2000 fighting over the WWF Hardcore title. It was the equivalent of what The André the Giant Memorial Battle Royal is now, giving lower Superstars on the roster a chance to do something and wrestle on WWE’s biggest event of the year.

The match was supposed to have Crash Holly retaining his title by the skin of his teeth but things didn’t go according to plan. Towards the end of the match Tazz hooked in the Tazzmission on Crash, only for Hardcore Holly to come and smash a jar of candy over Tazz’s head. Hardcore Holly pinned Crash, who had dropped to the mat with only a few seconds remaining on the clock. The timer was supposed to go off after the pinfall, thus resulting in Crash barely retaining. But referee Tim White started counting too early, resulting in Hardcore Holly winning the match and title.

There was a lot of confusion after the match, with even Howard Finkel announcing Hardcore Holly as the winner with a question mark to the live crowd.

To rectify the blunder the WWF had Crash regain the title from Hardcore Holly the next night on Raw is War.
