You knew this was coming.

The ultimate example of not reading the room, WWE decided to end their biggest pay-per-view with a disastrous return to the status quo.

As the New Generation started to rise slowly, WrestleMania IX rolled into Caesars Palace in Las Vegas with Bret Hart holding the top prize. The giant Yokozuna was standing in his way with their main event looking to be the first Hulk Hogan-less ending to the Grandaddy since it began; Hollywood had somehow managing to appear even when he wasn’t in the match in previous years.

As the Hitman looked beaten, guess who made his way to the ring. Mr. Fuji threw some salt in Hart’s eyes, and moments later, Yokozuna was the new champion. The Hulkster was livid and, with Bret’s blessing, he stepped into the ring for a match of his own. Avoiding Fuji’s second salt throw in five minutes Hogan knocked the champion off his feet, hit the Leg Drop and made the cover. Yay?

Don’t let what people say now take away from the fact that the crowd cheered this. They ate it all up, but the following three months saw the belt moved back onto Yokozuna and the Hulkster departing for pastures new. One year later, the reset button was pressed and the Hitman would go over Yokozuna and raise the gold to end the show.

One of the biggest missteps in WWE history was righted.
