10 Times WWE Completely Wasted The Royal Rumble
8. Charlotte Flair Wins In 2020
Charlotte Flair's win in 2020 wasn't popular.
Flair is undeniably talented and has enjoyed a storied career, but her win felt like a safe, predictable choice rather than an exciting and fresh one. Fans were hoping for a new face to get the spotlight, someone who hadn't already been at the top of the women's division multiple times.
The disappointment stemmed from the fact that WWE fans had seen the Queen bulldoze the women's division enough times already. She'd held countless titles in her career, so why should fans care about her going to WrestleMania to challenge for another title? Spoiler: they didn't.
Following her Rumble win, Flair chose to challenge Rhea Ripley for the NXT Women's Championship at WrestleMania 36. While this was an unexpected twist, it didn't entirely satisfy those who felt her victory should have led to more. The match itself was solid, but it didn't have the same impact as a fresh face winning the Rumble and going on to challenge for a main roster title. If this was an attempt to put the NXT strap on a level playing field with the belts from Raw and SmackDown, it didn't work.
Flair dropped the belt a few months later to Io Shirai and the experiment came to an end.
