2017 was a funny old time for WWE's largely undervalued and often under-utilised mid-card strap.

With AJ Styles and Kevin Owens locked in a back-and-forth programme over the United States Championship, The Phenomenal One would surprisingly prise the title away from the Prizefighter during a Madison Square Garden house show.

With that unexpected development still fresh in fans' minds, though, a little sprinkle of controversy was further dusted into the mix as KO suddenly won back the title at Battleground. As Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter would report, Styles was originally set to win the match as the show went on air, with it not being clear if the finish was altered just before or even during the contest itself.

The fact that Owens would then drop the title to Styles in a three-way with a returning Chris Jericho a few days later only made the last-minute decision to strap KO seem even more perplexing in hindsight, summing up what can best be described as another questionable and downright odd period for the often overlooked title.
