10 Times WWE Dropped The Ball On CM Punk

1. The Summer Of Punk

CM Punk Triple H
WWE

This should have been the moment that WWE entered a new era of prosperity and creative wonder. Despite booking him like a total chump for the better part of nine months, CM Punk entered the last month of his contract with enough credibility to be granted a WWE Championship shot. One iconic promo later, he was the hottest thing in pro wrestling.

WWE did the right thing by having Punk win the title at Money in the Bank 2011, but practically every step from that point on was a mistake. Punk left with the title but was only gone for a single week. By the time he was declared the undisputed champion, WWE decided that Kevin Nash was just what the story needed, introducing a completely nonsensical text message storyline that still confuses to this very day.

Somehow, someway, WWE managed to take CM Punk becoming the hottest star in the business and create a Kevin Nash vs. Triple H feud out of it. The failures of the Summer of Punk are just about as well-documented as CM Punk-related WWE things get, but it still astounds today. Never has a wrestling company been given a ball that was dropped as comprehensively.

Born in the middle of Wales in the middle of the 1980's, John can't quite remember when he started watching wrestling but he has a terrible feeling that Dino Bravo was involved. Now living in Prague, John spends most of his time trying to work out how Tomohiro Ishii still stands upright. His favourite wrestler of all time is Dean Malenko, but really it is Repo Man. He is the author of 'An Illustrated History of Slavic Misery', the best book about the Slavic people that you haven't yet read. You can get that and others from www.poshlostbooks.com.
