10 Times WWE Forced It Down Our Throats
3. John Cena
John Cena doesn’t get the respect he deserves. There, that wasn’t so hard, was it?
'Big Match John' is the last of a dying breed: a transcendental talent who outgrew the company that made him. WWE has had performers who may have grown to the same level of popularity, but it has learnt its lesson from years of making stars. WWE is the attraction, not its individuals. This will eventually lead to the death of the company as we know it, but that’s another story for another time.
Somehow, someway, being shoved down the throats of the WWE Universe didn’t lead to the death of John Cena as a top babyface star. "Cena" and "Overcoming the Odds" might just be the most iconic couple in modern WWE, but fans today may never really understand the visceral hatred Cena inspired in the audience, vitriol that came about as the company tried to make him the most loved man in the industry.
Nobody in the modern age was as all-conquering as John Cena. He won, he always won, even when faced with seemingly insurmountable odds. It was boring, but it kept happening. By the time Cena no-sold a DDT on the concrete floor and single-handedly vanquished The Nexus, a convincing argument could be made that it was Wade Barrett and co who were at a disadvantage.
Cena isn’t deserving of the criticism that has been thrown his way over the years. WWE’s relentless approach to booking him should take all the flack.
