What The Main Event Should Have Been: The Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels

The storyline going into WrestleMania 25 was that of Randy Orton making former Evolution stable-mate Triple H’s life a living hell by targeting him and his family on weekly Raw segments. Orton played the role of despicable villain wonderfully, but in a more enlightened era few bought his actions as anything other than scripted fantasy drama. The match was hurt by a stipulation where Hunter would lose his WWE Championship should he be counted out of disqualified, which was designed to add tension and a degree of unpredictability to the bout, but instead served to remove all shortcuts and the potential for wild brawling that would have saved it from the tepid affair it ended up being.

More pertinent was the bout’s position on the card. Had it come earlier in the show, the reaction would likely have been more favourable, but they went on last following an all-time classic Undertaker vs. Shawn Michaels match, meaning their contest was fought in front of near silence. Triple H realised this would be the case after watching Michaels-Taker, walking over to Orton in the dressing room and casually telling him, “We are f****d.” He was right.
