10 Times WWE Grossly Mis-Read Their Audience

2. Making Mabel King Of The Ring

The King Of The Ring has had a pretty weird history, one extended by the ongoing treatment of the latest 'King', Wade Barrett. On occasion, the WWF/WWE hasn't really done the best they could with those who have won the tournament, meaning winners like Ken Shamrock and Billy Gunn have been largely forgotten about as previous wrestling 'Kings'. In 1995, the then-WWF was struggling somewhat to create new stars. Probably the only ones of any real interest in the entire company were Bret Hart, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels and maybe Diesel, so it was clear that something had to be done in order to get more wrestlers up to their level. Unfortunately for the fans, Vince McMahon chose Mabel. Having pretty much exclusively worked as a tag wrestler before this big push, Mabel won the '95 King Of The Ring, even beating The Undertaker on his way to the crown. The event itself was pretty dull, and the fact that the company announced Mabel vs. Diesel as the main event of SummerSlam did little to hype that particular show either. It wouldn't be long before the big man was away from the main event scene, but fans didn't want to see him there in the first place!
