10 Times WWE Hit The Mainstream In 2014

6. WWE Network

Vince McMahon revolutionised professional wrestling in the mid-eighties when he brought supercard events like WrestleMania to pay-per-view. It changed the way wrestling was structured and presented in the mainstream, and is now the cornerstone of how WWE plans their year out. Last year, Vince McMahon and WWE changed the game again with the introduction of WWE Network, a fully over-the-top streaming service that featured every WWE, WCW & ECW pay-per-view ever, along with 1000€™s of hours of footage from their vast tape library. Perhaps most importantly, they offered every pay-per-view event live and in HD through the Network, all for $9.99 per month. This didn€™t just make waves in the wrestling world, as many outlets realised the potential in a service like WWE Network and supposed that it would be the pioneer of a new way to watch television. Now, going into 2015, there€™s an over-the-top streaming service dedicated entirely to The Simpsons, and HBO are developing one that you don€™t need to have a HBO subscription to access. Words like visionary get thrown around a lot, but when you look at the ways Vince McMahon has revolutionised entertainment, it€™s hard to argue the label. In five years when everyone is using services like WWE Network, wrestling fans will be able to look back and claim that they were there first.
