10 Times WWE Legends Got Squashed
2. Honky Tonk Man (Vs. Ultimate Warrior - SummerSlam 1988)
The squash match, perfected.
For context, The Honky Tonk Man was an arrogant, chickensh*t heel who held the Intercontinental Title for a still-unequalled 64 weeks. Using every dirty trick in the book HTM clung on to the title against fan favourites like Macho Man Randy Savage, Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake and Ricky Steamboat, leaving fans incensed for over a year until he ran into a Warrior-shaped roadblock at SummerSlam '88.
Everything about this was booked to perfection. The Honky Tonk Man had been built up as the smuggest, most irritating heel in the company and The Ultimate Warrior was the perfect opponent to knock him off his perch. The hugely over babyface was a whirling dervish in the ring and used that manic energy to clobber Honky into submission before the latter could even change into his ring gear, let alone cheat.
Warrior's burgeoning popularity and blitzkrieg style of wrestling made him the perfect choice to dethrone one of the '80s' sneakiest heels, and the ecstatic reaction of the crowd showed that McMahon had booked arguably the most satisfying squash match of all time.
