In 1993, the WWF was in desperate need of new stars as it looked to transition away from the era of Hulkamania.

At the forefront of the heel roster was newcomer Razor Ramon, who immediately found himself feuding with top babyfaces Randy Savage, the Ultimate Warrior, and Mr. Perfect. And at Royal Rumble '93, Razor challenged WWF Champion Bret "Hitman" Hart.

Given Razor's push coupled with the sudden promotion of a lifelong mid-carder to WWF Champion, many fans thought Ramon would leave the Rumble as champion. Add to that the wide speculation that Mr. Perfect would win the Royal Rumble, and though it may be hard to believe in hindsight, Mr. Perfect vs. WWF Champion Razor Ramon made perfect sense as WrestleMania IX's main event. Instead, Razor submitted to the Sharpshooter as the company built Bret as its next flagship performer, a notion they suddenly abandoned just two months later.

Rather than paying off his feud with Perfect at WrestleMania, Razor wrestled Bob Backlund in a throwaway match. Razor never reached the WWF's main event again.
