In 2006, fans witnessed a group of male cheerleaders come out to help The Coach win his Royal Rumble qualifying match. Before long, the faction known as The Spirit Squad was pushed, appearing alongside Mr McMahon during a feud with Shawn Michaels. Rather than pose a credible threat to other wrestlers, The Spirit Squad was obnoxious and rarely won clean. Most of its heat came from irritating fans by simply existing rather than proving themselves to be effective heels.

The group didn't get over well with the fans, and WWE finally acted on the vocal disapproval by removing the faction from its programming. Before the company did so, though, it wanted to make a point of showing fans their opinions were heard.

Concluding a feud with DX, the group became the butt of a joke anyone not in The Spirit Squad could have enjoyed. Not only did DX bring the cheerleaders down, but the duo went a step further to bury the gimmick for good. They shoved the members into a freight crate with a sign reading "Destination: OVW", the former developmental territory. In doing so, WWE revealed to fans that it knew The Spirit Squad members were still green and needed more practice before they could have ever returned to WWE.
