10 Times WWE Pulled The Trigger (When You Least Expected It)

Money in the Bank briefcase holders tend to lend themselves over to the idea of a sudden surprise quite easily.

Yet, even with there hardly ever being any clear evidence as to when the cash-in will actually happen, many fans still find themselves trying to predict the exact time said holder will make good on their contracted world title shot - which is all part of the fun, I guess.

In some cases it can be quite predictable, seen in the likes of Brock Lesnar's recent cash-in at Extreme Rules 2019. But, on the odd occasion the briefcase can pop up when least expected and it's within these instances that magic can unfold.

2013 MITB winner, Randy Orton, had been teasing a cash-in for weeks in the lead-up to SummerSlam and that in itself convinced many fans that WWE couldn't possibly follow through on something so obvious.

However, after Daniel Bryan dramatically knocked off John Cena for the WWE title in a memorable main event, they did just that and Orton aligned himself with former mentor Triple H to steal away Bryan's newly won championship.

In a glaring example of a signature WWE trope, the company led us to believe that our self-anointed chosen one had finally reached the top of the mountain, only to firmly re-establish the status quo in soul-crushing fashion.

Pure theatre.
