10 Times WWE Stars Were Scapegoats For Bad Booking
3. Roman Reigns
Speaking of people who were booed vociferously following their Royal Rumble victories... Roman Reigns!
While Reigns had earned the adulation of the crowd in the 2014 Rumble, which saw him eliminate a then-record 12 people, he'd largely fallen out of the good graces of the fans by the next year's Rumble. Given that he was being booked as a white-meat babyface who scarcely lost, it was clear that WWE wanted The Big Dog to be the face of the company going forward. Problem was, for various reasons, fans did not feel like he had earned such a distinction.
So, when he won the 2015 Rumble, his treatment was much like that of Batista before him. Only much, much worse.
But it's not like any of this was Reigns' fault. Not being Daniel Bryan (again) wasn't his fault, being booked to win all the time wasn't his fault, yet this victory and just about all of his subsequent ones have been met with virulent hatred. Even now, the accusations of nepotism, the mixed (but mostly negative) responses to his music, and the chants of "you can't wrestle!" and "Roman sucks!" echo throughout arenas whenever he shows up.
He's really not as bad as fans claim, and it's unfair that he's blamed for so much of the WWE's booking faux pas. But, the fans need somebody to blame when their favorites lose, so who better than the "face of the company"?
