10 Times WWE Totally No Sold A Wrestler's Past
2. Randy Savage
"Macho Man" Randy Savage is a legendary force in the world of professional wrestling. His run for the then-WWF between 1985 and 1994 was the stuff of legend. Savage came out of the gate as an immediate star, with all the top managers of the time desperate to hire him, though he chose to take Miss Elizabeth on the wild ride to the top. Yet despite being a territory days star, the man who made the "Macho Man" didn't factor into his son's onscreen WWE success.
As a wrestler, Angelo Poffo held the NWA Midwest Heavyweight Championship, the Chicago incarnation of the NWA United States Heavyweight Championship, and various tag team titles. Away from the ring he was also a promoter buying into Emile Dupree's Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling as well as running the "outlaw" International Championship Wrestling between 1978 and 1984 (where Randy met Elizabeth).
Despite his impressive pedigree, it is possible to overthink and overload a gimmick. Adding Randy's lineage to the already hyped-to-100 character would have muddied his expression as a sports entertainer. Plus, in the name game, Savage trumps Poffo.
Maybe Angelo's time as a competitive chess player came in useful for his other son Lanny Poffo's "The Genius" persona.
