10 Times WWE Wasted Potentially Epic Storylines

9. Who Ran Down Austin?

Like the illegitimate son angle, this began as a mystery angle with limitless potential, only to quickly fizzle and disappoint once Austin's assailant was revealed. We know now that Rikishi was the man behind the wheel, and that he did it "for The Rock, for the people" - motivated by the perceived lack of opportunity granted to his Samoan cousin while Stone Cold ruled the Attitude Era roost. Immediately, this pay-off didn't click. Rikishi was a natural babyface (and a midcard babyface at that), a guy who'd primarily gotten over as part of Too Cool. Fans simply weren't ready to hate him - or accept him in the main event scene - and his heel push went nowhere. In an attempt to salvaged something from the angle, WWF had Austin discover that Triple H was actually the mastermind behind the plan - and although this culminated in a brutally entertaining 'Three Stages of Hell' match at No Way Out 2001, it rendered a once-promising storyline nonsensical and disappointing.
