10 Times WWE's Attitude Era Got SERIOUSLY Weird
4. Hawk Jumps From The Titantron
Pro wrestling is thankfully a cleaner landscape in the modern age. Wrestlers are treated and paid like pro athletes, and those that need help in the shape of time off or help with any kind of addiction are generally afforded these things. The Attitude Era was a very different proposition.
Legion of Doom's Hawk was at a stage in his life where he was struggling with alcoholism and substance abuse, as the team rebranded as LOD 2000. LOD would add the late Darren Drozdov to their ranks, but felt out of date next to the likes of The New Age Outlaws, before WWE decided to play Hawk's real-life problems out on camera to try to capture fans imagination.
It's a tough watch, as Hawk would show up "unfit to wrestle", joining commentary with slurred words and an intoxicated demeanour. Hawk's jealousy surrounding new member Droz would eventually cause Animal to have enough and hit the Doomsday Device on him with his new partner. This would prove all too much for the struggling Hawk, who climbed the Titantron in anguish on the November 16th, 1998 episode of Raw. LOD would attempt to coax Hawk down, only for Droz to "accidentally" shove him off the Titantron after a scuffle.
The storyline would get darker, as it would unfold that Droz provided Hawk with drugs and booze to corrupt him and take his place in the tag team. It's absolute rot on every level, and the kind of inhumane creative that Vince McMahon specialized in.
