10 Unbelievable WrestleMania Matches That Almost Happened
6. Sting Vs. Kurt Angle - WrestleMania X8
After WCW fell apart, Sting appearing at WrestleMania was a consistent topic within the wrestling rumour mill. Talks of a dream match against The Undertaker seemed to recur almost annually and came agonisingly close to happening on a number of occasions, most notably at WrestleMania XXVII.
However, many may not be aware that Sting actually came very close to signing with WWE years earlier. According to former WWE writer, Dave Lagana, Sting was considered a lock in 2002 and the writing team were even instructed to work him into booking plans for WrestleMania X8. Those plans allegedly saw WCW's franchise player square off with WWE's Olympic gold medalist.
Sadly, WWE failed to secure 'The Stinger' and Angle was placed into a throwaway mid-card bout with Kane. Meanwhile, Sting would remain in semi-retired until he joined the World Wrestling All-Stars in late 2002.
While WWE ultimately failed to pull off the wrestling dream match, Angle and Sting eventually squared off a number of times in TNA. The duo even main evented TNA's flagship event, Bound For Glory, in 2007, battling over the TNA World Heavyweight Championship in arguably one of the best matches of Sting's career.
Nevertheless, the pairing of Angle and Sting in WWE would have been magic and 'The Grandest Stage of Them All' would have been the perfect platform.
