5. Jamie Noble - WWE Cruiserweight Champion (2002)

The guy was money with his trailer park trash gimmick and was an incredible in-ring performer to boot. A guy who could make fans laugh with his over-the-top persona and keep them invested in the action thanks to his considerable skill, Noble was the complete package, his only weakness being his lack of size. He overcame that deficiency however and went on to become one of the most memorable characters of the early Ruthless Aggression Era. As the Cruiserweight champion throughout the summer and fall of 2002, he became the measuring stick of a division overflowing with talented individuals. Noble brought a sense of sports-entertainment to cruiserweight wrestling that was previously missing. Sure, both Tajiri and The Hurricane were very entertaining but their full potential was never explored during their time as champion. Noble was given the opportunity to star in vignettes that enhanced his character and helped him get over far more than he ever would have just by plying his craft inside the squared circle. As champion, Noble successfully defended against everyone from the aforementioned Tajiri and Hurricane to Funaki and Billy Kidman and helped the Cruiserweight title gain traction on a SmackDown brand trying desperately to differentiate itself from Monday Night Raw. That he was key in that differentiation helps cement his rank on this list.
