A lot of people wished they were the Rock.

Where Austin was relatable, or at least his motivation was at the character's stratospheric peak, Rock was different. People aspired to be him, but in a different way; Austin was the guy who told the authority to f*ck off, while people lived through the Rock vicariously because his put-downs were sensational. He said the things you wished you had the panache to reel off in social situations - and with perfect timing.

His best bit, because it reduced his opponents to little nuggets of sh*t and cruelty can be funny sometimes, is when he would feign to ask them a question. He was always perfect at pretending to be sincere. He was never overly nice. He was disarming. And then, after he'd lured them in, he let them have it with "...it doesn't matter!"

Though the man didn't time it anywhere near as well, it was actually the long-forgotten Tiger Ali Singh who did the bit first, in one of those rotten segments in which he aimed to "prove" that Americans were disgusting pigs or whatever. When a woman he plucked from the audience was asked to eat something vile, he asked what her name was.

When she motioned to answer, Singh said "That's irrelevant, doesn't really matter."
