While not a top asset that the WWE brass is always looking for, it certainly helps in proving that someone can perform the basics of wrestling. Even though wrestling in WWE has taken on its own form, once in a while we’ll see some chain grappling and other wrestling fundamentals in a match that allows the wrestlers involved to show off their skills.

And the one man who does this best is William Regal. He is one of the best technical wrestlers of his generation, yet been underrated for many years. However, while his own career wasn’t that successful, what he does in terms of wrestling fundamentals is very important.

One of the hidden gems to be found on WWE Superstars is a match between student Daniel Bryan and mentor William Regal. The match opens with the two technicians exchanging quick wrestling holds and providing the audience with a rare treat to some basic wrestling holds. These short exchanges at the beginning of a match are a lost art in modern WWE. Most competitive matches just start with a short collar-and-elbow tie-up before turning into a brawling contest.

If crowds saw more of these things at the beginning of a match, the wrestlers would be taken more seriously as athletes, and the match would have some early excitement to get the crowd invested. That’s why more wrestlers should study Regal, and this match in particular. Small details and some basic wrestling holds can actually go a long way in making a wrestler look like a better athlete.

The commentators were on the money with this match: watch the little things that separate William Regal from the rest of the pack. If you want to be a WWE Superstar, pay attention to what he does.
